The 1994 Power Macintosh Rollout demo
Aldus & Apple

Apple & Aldus contracted ARTLab to develop a live demonstration focused on publishing, that could be used as a showcase worldwide for the rollout of the first Power Macintosh architecture.

The goal was to show how the PowerMac, PowerPC native Aldus applications & newly enabled OS technologies would completely change and enhance the way that a creative company would be able to do business.

To develop the demo, ARTlab contacted and worked with Ben & Jerry's, a very hip and visually playful company.

ARTlab learned that Ben & Jerry's was about to release a new "boxless" package for their ice cream bars. This offered a great opportunity to give the PowerMac rollout extra visibility by associating it with the Ben & Jerry's rollout.

The integrated demos showed how Ben & Jerry's could tackle the production process of this boxless package in a completely new way with Power Macintosh - increasing efficiency, meeting deadlines, reducing costs and enhancing the creative process.

Software & Apple OS technologies included illustration, pagelayout, prepress, CAD, 3D rendering, workgroup calendaring & messaging, AppleScript, voice recognition and remote viewing & annotation.

The demos were driven through a Ben & Jerry's Project Schedule Calendar interface. A user clicked on a due date for a particular piece of the workflow and the appropriate demo would launch. A complete written script and AppleScript automation made it easy for a presenter to give a very compelling demo.

In addition to the live demo pieces, ARTLab also produced several pieces of full color collateral including a brochure, a "Rolling Cone Newsletter", signage and free ice cream coupons for US rollout events.

ARTlab handled all aspects of the demos:

  • Working with Apple and Aldus engineers to create working demos using prerelease software and hardware
  • Working with 3rd-party developers to convince them to implement Apple OS technologies so they could be part of the demo
  • Working with Ben & Jerry's to understand their workflow, to obtain content, and to negotiate legal approvals
  • Creating all demos, interface, scripts & custom graphics
  • Creating all print collateral and a CD for final distribution

The demo was very successful at garnering attention and was used for over a year at publishing events worldwide.
