Apple contracted ARTLab to develop a proof-of-concept demos to show how Apple Servers could efficiently host a powerful and fast e-commerce solution.
ARTlab developed a fully functioning datbase driven website for e-commerce using WebCatalog storefront & WebMerchant transaction software. This solution was then distilled down into "foolproof" working demos that could be distributed to Apple sales persons and run using a Web server over the internet, an intranet or even on a single machine (acting as both web server and client).
The demo was produced using two selectable databases: a retail furniture database which included QuickTime VR and a Fruit & Nut gift database.
In the most simple scenario of the demo
1) A user logs onto the web site and browses or searches for a product and stock availability.
2) Adds products to their shopping cart.
3) Chooses to purchase the product and fills out (or software recalls) the billing & shipping information
4) Clicks on the purchase button and the system auto-dials VISA and obtains credit card authorization.
6) A billing email is sent to accounting, a fulfillment email to the shipping department, and the user receive a confirmation email.
ARTLab handled all aspects of the demos:
- Working with the software vendor to implement special features for the demo
- Designing the site and writing the custom html
- Preparing the content & database
- Developing a presentation & script for presentors
