Apple contracted ARTlab to develop a proof-of-concept demonstration that would show how media assets created on a Macintosh, could be intelligently and automatically re-expressed across different delivery media (Kiosk, CD, Print & Web).
ARTLab developed three different database-driven publishing scenarios:
- Blockbuster Video "New Releases" in-store kiosk & newsletter
- San Francisco Examiner Web page & newspaper page
- McGraw Hill textbook spread & CD ROM
Each demo used AppleScript to access the appropriate content from a client/server database and then automatically flow and format the content into templates for delivery on Kiosk, CD, Print or Web.
Depending on the delivery media, the scripts would differentially select which types of content were used (e.g. QuickTime videos & 72 dpi still shots would be selected for the Kiosk while 300 dpi still shots would be used in the printed newsletter)
ARTLab handled all aspects of the demos:
- Creating the scenarios
- Obtaining & preparing content
- Working with the design firm for the kiosk graphics
- Writing the AppleScripts
- Writing the presentation scripts and help files
The demo was made available to Apple field sales worldwide for live presentations on cross-media authoring.
